Scottsdale Sun

For the third year in a row, we had a sneak peek of summer with a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona that left everyone with the start of a tan, gave Molly a jump on her green hair (the plight of the towhead), and got us all eager for warmer temps at home!

We worked in two Spring Training games, but spent most of our time poolside soaking in the sun, shoring up swimming skills, and sneaking in some frozen adult beverages.

Our kids absolutely adore the lifeguards and staff at the resort, especially the contests that they run on the hour starting at noon every day. The contests rope in kids of all ages, and include all sorts of wet and wild fun, including water balloon tosses, water slide races, dive stick challenges, pool races, cannonball contests, "shoot for a snow cone" basketball challenges, and poolside trivia. Our kids' fanatic obsession with these challenges must be genetic, since I vividly remember setting up many of these same water games at our pool growing up.

Even our littlest swimmer got in on the action, winning a cannonball contest for her age group (she was the only entrant ;) and acing a water slide race. She was the favorite of all the lifeguards because she was game for all the contests and able to hang with the big kids, despite her teeny-tiny size. We had many, many parents approach us and ask how old she was, in complete astonishment that she's able to swim as well as she does.

We were astonished, too, at just how easy it is now to be around water with our three little fishies. We've put in lots of hard work over the years to get them water-safe, and still have one more season ahead of us when we'll need to be vigilant with Molly, but their strength in the water gives them an amazing independence, and gives us a much-needed break!

The reason for the season... baseball!

We met up with the Millers for a full day at the pool and then an afternoon at the ball game the next day, and the kids could not have been more delighted to have Lorelai and Lily with them in Scottsdale! They made lots of "vacation friends," but nothing beats old friends!

By nighttime each day, these kids were tuckered out from the sun, the water, and the play.

Drill Sergeant

Nothing sums up Joey's personality better than this "note to self" I discovered taped to the inside of his bedroom door, placed so he can see it first thing in the morning.

I had no idea he knew the term "such as" or that he spoke to himself in all caps. Daily, we're impressed, and a little worried, by his determination and his resolve to be a good boy. Mostly, though, we're thankful!

TBall, Take Two

There's just something about this little girl's face when she's playing a sport that I love to pieces. She has a perma-smile and confidence that comes from heaven knows where, a belief that that dirtier you get, the better you played, and an utter and complete love for getting tired and sweaty.

She is game for anything, whether it's donning her brother's old cleats with a smile, using his old baseball belt to cinch up her baseball pants, stopping grounders with his hand-me-down glove, stepping confidently up to the plate, or running past her teammate at third base in her rush to get home.

It's her second year of tee-ball, and her sixth year of living in a baseball-obsessed house, so this little pigtailed girl knows her way around the diamond, and has not hesitated at all in showing all of the boys on her team how to hit, catch and throw.

Here's to another season of baseball, times two!

In Full Swing

Baseball season is in full swing (bad pun intended) in these parts, and that means that 2/5 of our family is completely and utterly absorbed in the sport, and 3/5 of the family is along for the ride. Luckily, this involves lots of wild cheering from the sidelines, lots of playing in the dirt, and lots of palling around with some pretty awesome "older boys."

This year,  Tim and Joey are sporting the Pirates uniform for the third year in a row, and are lucky to be playing and coaching with two of their favorite people for the third year in a row, Joey's best friend Andy and his dad, Eric.

I love these photos from the end of last season, and hope to get more like these this season!

This year, Joey is playing shortstop and first base, dabbles at playing catcher, and when he comes up to bat, the other coaches always holler at their outfielders, "Get back!!! Way back!" I'm pretty there's nothing Joey loves more than hearing that... except for maybe the after-game snack ;)

All Thumbs

Our one and only thumbsucker shows no signs of giving up her habit. In fact, she's a self-proclaimed expert on it.

Her big sister famously (in our family) told her preschool teacher on her 4th birthday, "I know everything now." But Molly, two months before turning 4, apparently has a much smaller scope of knowledge.

"I know a lot of things," she told me this week. "I know all about thumbs. I know that if you suck them too hard they will fall off. And I know that my thumb makes my mouth feel cozy. I also know about puppies, Rottweilers and Mastiffs. And I know all about Slurpees. That's all I know."
