Our trusty learn-to-read book is getting pretty dog-eared and marked-up, but we hauled it out for another go-round this week to get the reading party started one more time, this time for Molly May.
I'm not sure who was more excited... the actual pupil, or her brother and sister. They spent some ridiculously nostalgic moments flipping through the book, oohing and ahhing over their graffiti doodles on almost every page, giggling over their favorite stories ("Ooh, remember the one where the tiger licked the man???!!!"), and basically promising Molly she was about to have the time of her life.
Then the four of us headed to CVS to buy Molly her special posterboard for keeping track of how many lessons she accomplishes, and more importantly, for counting down to that coveted toy earned for every 20th lesson. While we were standing in the checkout line -- each giddy child helping carry one giant posterboard -- an older man buying whiskey cocked his eyebrows as if he couldn't quite believe what he was seeing, and announced, "I've never seen kids that excited about a piece of paper!"
We got to work decorating the poster as soon as we got home. And by "we" I mean my trusty sidekick, Joey. He painstakingly measured out a grid for 100 squares for the 100 lessons and used a yardstick and a Sharpie to make the lines, then numbered each box, then finally turned his masterpiece over to Molly to write her name on top.
I have a feeling I will have a very willing student this time around, and maybe even some very willing little teachers!
