Yes, once again, it seemed, we were going to play host to a stomach bug during the holidays.
I chucked my miles-long Christmas to-do list, mentally girded myself for a harrowing week, stocked up on laundry detergent and carpet cleaner, and did my best to follow him around with hand sanitizer.
But despite my best efforts, as soon as Joey started feeling better, Clara (whose very best quality may be that she has never missed a toilet and even has an uncanny ability to hold her hair back while hovering over said toilet) announced that she had "the threw-ups," but that she didn't feel sick. In fact, after 12 hours of running back and forth from her toys to the bathroom, she was looking and acting so perky, we decided to brave a Christmas Eve Mass and dinner that night with Hop and Mop and the Stecher cousins.
Fortunately, our germs didn't spread to them, but unfortunately, I started feeling sick myself as soon as we returned home that night. By the next morning, I was so under the weather that nothing could induce me to get out of bed ... even the kids opening their Santa presents. We had to back out of our annual Christmas Day dinner in Gilroy, and also cancel a big party we were planning on hosting the next day for the entire Field family.
Despite all the sickness, and its aftermath -- Joey still isn't back to 100% a week later, and even had a stomach ultrasound on Thursday morning to rule out appendicitis -- we're thankful that it didn't spread any further than it did! And despite the fact that the bug completely ruined our Christmas break, we've still loved every minute of our days at home this week, relaxing, taking long naps, and playing with new toys!
With two sick kiddos, I'm amazed that we managed to get even one photo of our trio in their Christmas finery.
I'm also amazed that Bridget remained healthy after this night of mutual cousin adoration.
We had a delicious meal and lots of cousin excitement at Shawna and Matt's house that night!
Without me behind the camera, we just have two shots from Christmas morning! I present these grainy finds from Tim's phone.
We were thankful for many things this year, but this moment might take the prize: Joey settling down just after opening Christmas presents to pen a thank-you note to Santa Claus.
I pried the letter out of its envelope and scanned it before we dropped it in the mailbox and sent it on its way to the North Pole.
We finally opened our non-Santa presents on Monday night, after a delicious ham dinner.
We hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday! Here's to Twenty Dozen!
