Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli

It's possible that we're the only parents in the greater Bay Area who are completely cavalier about our children playing with (water) guns. A dad definitely cringed when I pulled them out of our toy bag at the sandbox last week, and a mom at the park yesterday was aghast when her daughter ran up to her with a neon pink gun and asked, "What is this?? Does it shoot??" She grimaced, and said, "It's a sprinkler, honey. And no, we don't shoot."

But however un-politically correct they may be, they were a hit at both Twain Harte and Lake Tahoe, with both the Cecchin cousins and the Raley gang of girls.

Those guns were not without injury. Both Tim and Tom had wicked cuts on their trigger fingers from the seam in the plastic. Kid-sized fingers apparently are not affected. So to keep people safe, we must keep these (water) guns out of the hands of adults.

This is so true. I defeated the purpose of pre-assembled gift bags when I arrived at a party where the Mom asked me to dismantle all the gift bags to remove the guns. I wanted to shoot her. (oh!)

Our gang was having a ball with our water pistols at TH. A nearby seven year old was alone and looked bored making sand castles on the beach ... despite the multitude of sand toys he had packed in his "Whole Foods Market" cloth shopping bag.
