It's hard to believe that Ralph Waldo Emerson wasn't a mother, so spot-on was he when he wrote about the sense of lightness we feel when the last books are read, the lights are out, and all are asleep for the night: "There was never a child so lovely, but his mother was glad to get him to sleep."
But our memories are short. The most puzzling phenomenon of parenthood may be the fact that even after an exhausting, frustrating, trying day with our children, when we tiptoe into their rooms at night before turning in ourselves, we actually miss them, and feel the inexplicable impulse to wake them!

yes! I think this every night...I want to wake her up to play more even though a few hours earlier I'd been so ready for a break. :)
That is too true...I think he is just the sweetest little thing even if 10 minutes prior, I wanted to sell him to the circus.
Very beautiful images and sentiments. (But, I just got Marco the Magnificent down for his nap, and if any of you so much as sneezes....)
Such sweet pictures of your kids! I love to look at my sleeping kids; their personalities are so evident even as they sleep! However, I have never, not once had the urge to wake them up again. I told my sister once; Never, ever wake a sleeping child. If your house is on fire, wait till the fire is imminent to their bedroom before you go get them!
