Swim, Sleep, Repeat, 2015 Edition

Will Joey ever forgive us for immortalizing his yearly sun-in-the-eyes, pained, squinting swim photo?Luckily, he has two pretty photogenic sisters who know how to smile and not grimace.

I love this yearly look at dry swimmers with dry, beautiful hair (well, actually, I'm not sure that Joey's hair has been combed or shampooed all summer, let alone for this picture), because the reality of the swim season is that in most of our pictures, our children look like aliens with swim caps and goggles, and have mouths and teeth stained blueberry or lime from Ring Pops or Airheads.

And when they're not wearing swim caps, their hair is sporting that telltale green tinge that is almost impossible to keep at bay for an entire summer. In other words, they look like this for about three months:

Fourth of July in the Mountains

Nothing says "God Bless America" quite like a bunch of happy kiddos in red, white and blue, getting to ride illegally in Hop's convertible for a Fourth of July parade. The one day of the year that seatbelt laws don't apply!

We loved celebrating this holiday and spending a chaotic few days with the Stechers and Hop and Mop. And our kids could not have been more thrilled to participate in the parade, which turned out to be quite the mountain affair, full of fire trucks, veterans, creative floats, cheerleaders, vintage cars and this crazy crew!

An All Star and His Paparazzi

The risk of being a mommy with a camera constantly in her hand is that you raise a daughter who constantly wants a camera in her hand... and you subsequently end up with 200 images from a single baseball game, mostly depicting:

1) your son's rear end in baseball pants;
2) extreme, unflattering close-ups of yourself, or
3) artistic shots of the stuffed animal that she brought along.

But then, sometimes, you get great images that really capture your son's skill and dedication... and it's worth having to sift through the other 189 shots from the day!

Thanks to my seven year-old shutterbug and diehard fan for documenting one of Joey's All Star games this summer. During the course of four weekend tournaments and one game against Lafayette Little League at St. Mary's College (pictured here), he did a lot of pitching, a LOT of catching (I'm surprised his body has recovered from so many squats!), and a lot of hitting.

His baseball pants will never be the same.

What Clara's Modern World is Coming to

The strains of Broadway favorites have been swirling through our house all year long -- much to Mommy's delight and Daddy's chagrin -- ever since Clara decided she was in love with all things musical theatre. She spent the last six months taking group voice lessons, learning "My Favorite Things" and "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music, and ended the year with a bang with a performance of "Kansas City" from Oklahoma.

Her smile on stage is megawatt and unstoppable, and can be seen from the very back of the theatre! It's clear that she's found something that truly makes her light up from inside!

Orphan Clara

Nothing may have cured Clara's desire to be independent and parentless as much as playing a put-upon, unloved and uncared orphan in her first musical theatre production, Annie. She loved the singing, the dancing, the fun onstage and off, but now that she has It's a Hardknock Life memorized forward and backward, she knows just how un-fun it would be to be pushing a mop around all day!

One thing she does know for sure, though, is that she wants to get back on that stage again (proving that she couldn't possibly be related to me)!

Molly May is 5!

All this month, I've been warning Molly May that I'm on the hunt for a shrinking machine. Every time we go to Target, I say, "Wait, I just need to find the shrinking machine aisle!" just so I can hear her squeal and say, "Nooo! You can't shrink me back to a baby!!! I'm almost five!"

It's almost impossible to believe that our littlest munchkin, the one who is by far our snuggliest and most happy to be held and babied, is turning a WHOLE HAND.

Those scientists out there have got to do something about this (they have technology for everything except freezing time!) because this little girl is looking way too grown up all of a sudden.

Luckily, she still has her pocket-size moments, though... all of these pictures were taken this month, just shy of five.

She may be small, but almost every day, we do a double take over something this little one says... she misses nothing. "I know, I'm a smart cookie, but don't say that again, okay?" she told me the other day. Apparently, I say that a lot.

She's my constant buddy, except for a few short hours every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, when she is peppering her preschool teachers with questions and observing and taking notes on every other personality in her class. She knows everything about everybody, including Joey and Clara's teachers, all of their friends, even their parents' names. She knows our schedule for the week backward and forward, and from the moment she climbs out of bed, she knows whether it's going to be a gymnastics day, a dance day, or -- most exciting of all -- a baseball game day.

A lot is going on in that little brain, and she narrates it much of the time. She loves stream-of-consciousness talking, and often will go off on a tangent, then pause, puzzled, and say, "Wait, how did that conversation even start?"

She's an exhausting little chatterbox, but she wouldn't be Molly May if she wasn't commenting on and questioning everything in her little world. As a new reader, she now has her eyes peeled for words all around her, on signs, magazines, milk cartons, cereal boxes, and, of course, books! She happily devours the little readers that Clara brings home from first grade, and this morning, even "passed" Clara's spelling test as I was quizzing her on the way to school. She's absorbed geometry from Joey this year, listened to each of his monthly speeches with gravity -- even with topics like Grover Cleveland and conjoined twins -- watched him practice for his timed math tests with huge interest, and joined in Clara's Daisy troop's letter-writing project for the local convalescent home.

In other words, this little girl is soooo ready for another amazing year of milestones: kindergarten, swim team, new friends, sleeping in her own room in the new house, and really diving into little girlhood.

But part of me is still on the lookout for that elusive shrinking machine!
