This weekend was the annual swim championship for Moraga and Orinda, two tiny towns that combined boast 10 swim clubs and thousands of swimmers, who all descend on Moraga's high school in late summer for three days of swim craziness.
As always, it was mass chaos, a normal swim meet on steroids, but this time I had back-up: For the first time in three years, Daddy was there to see what the fuss was all about... and make sure we didn't lose a child in a sea of wet kids wearing Speedos and goggles, and parents frantically wielding cameras and towels.
Just like last year, Clara put in a surprise killer performance, knocking almost 5 seconds off her time in freestyle, and 5 seconds off her backstroke time, which shockingly earned her a place in the finals for girls 6 and under, at #19 out of more than 100 girls.
Joey placed 28th in breaststroke out of 100 7 and 8 year-old boys, and zoomed to the finish line in backstroke as heat winner, placing #22 out 150 boys.
Both of them were heat winners, had their names
You'll just have to trust me (and their swim caps) that this is them in the water. Swimming is a sport that really tests your ability to see who's who in the water.
A rare shot of Joey's ribs ... he's in the green "jammers."
Joey getting a pep talk from his coach before getting on the blocks.
Joey pulling away with the lead in backstroke!
Clara getting pumped for finals in backstroke with Coach John.
She had an early lead, but got tangled in the lane lines at the end, leading to a 20th place finish in finals...ah, the perils of swimming on your back at the age of six ;)
We capped it all off with tattoos and ice creams!
