But what a gorgeous puppy she is! Meet Georgia, who was thrown over a fence in rural Sacramento, along with her brother. They landed with a thump in the yard of a dog walker who commutes to San Francisco and is friends with our former dog walker, who knew we had a soft spot for big, big, dogs. With monster paws and a long, lanky frame, it was clear that this puppy was still very young, but destined to be plus size.
We got talked into taking a detour on the way home from vacation to come by and see the female puppy (her brother was already spoken for). Despite my insistence that a dog was definitely not coming home with us, she won us over as soon as we pulled up. Within 30 seconds, I was already figuring out how we might be able to squeeze her into our very full car, already packed with three kids, Jake, suitcases and bikes. She made the journey home at my feet in the passenger seat... our vacation souvenir after a week and a half in Tahoe, Twain Harte, and Arnold.
Before we knew it, she was home with us, proving to be the sweetest, gentlest, most mellow four month-old puppy you've ever met. She's a brindle English Mastiff, known for their lazy, gentle nature. They drool more than they bark, love to drape their huge frames all over your furniture, and can fill in for ponies in a pinch. When we brought her home, she weighed 42 pounds. A week later, she weighs 47 pounds, and will likely keep on packing on the pounds at the rate of five pounds per week, topping out between 150 and 200 pounds. She'll eat us out of house and home, at the rate of six cups of dog food per day. Yikes!
