Tim is barely home from work each afternoon before he's pressed into pitching and catching service, and the crack of the bat and the thud of tennis balls, whiffle balls, and softballs are now the soundtrack of our evenings, before and after dinner. The balls are sailing over the roof of the garage and the house, and landing all over our front yard and driveway, and Tim couldn't be prouder that our house is officially home to a little slugger.
Besides coaching at home, Tim took on his first official coaching job this spring, wrangling Joey and the ten other 5 year-olds who made up the 2011 Astros.
Skill levels were all over the place -- some boys had never held a glove before or batted off a tee before, while the star of the team arrived toting his own baseball bag and batting gloves -- but they were all uniformly silly, rowdy, and hyper.
Harnessing their energy over the course of the season was no joke, teaching them how to field without dogpiling and fighting for the ball was an exercise in futility, and placings hundreds of balls on a tee throughout the course of the season may have tested all of Tim's patience. But Joey couldn't have been prouder to have his daddy coaching, and Tim wouldn't have had it any other way.
We love Joey's confidence and ability on the baseball field -- he's been swinging at a ball since he was two years old -- and hope it continues to be a passion for him. Whether or not his hits continue to elicit "oohs" and "ahhs" from fellow teeball coaches and parents, we know that baseball will grow his teamwork skills and his ability to focus and follow directions, and will always be a great way to make friends. Here's to many more spring baseball seasons!
